A Bad Case of the Stripes, written by David Shannon, is a story about a young girl who is so involved with what other people thinks, she begins to break out in "stripes." Her worst fears come true as others laugh and ridicule her for finding different. The character must learn what "being yourself" means and how to overcome fears about self-acceptance and empathy. The illustrations are also very colorful and will keep elementary children entertained over and over again. A Bad Case of the Stripes is listed at a 3.5 reading book level, so it is appropriate for students who are reading at least at a mid third-grade level.
A Bad Case of the Stripes can also be utilized with many dissimilar activities to enhance the understanding level of the reading. Students could begin by using pictures or words to make a class list of favorite least favorite foods. Using a spreadsheet agenda to make a graph would also concentrate technology. Someone else idea is for students to make a lima bean method at home with a parent.
