She had a hard time insight how it could say one thing on their transcript and yet they are not working at that level. She had no idea what they were teaching them in high school English and she wished that she had this potential of data from all the kids that applied, not just from homeschoolers.

I found that encouraging on so many separate levels. It was nice to know that we stacked up quite well against our peers. But it for real said to me that more records were better and to for real give them what they wanted.

So for me, knowing at this point that I will graduate magna cum laude (thank you laude!) regardless of what grades I receive this semester, has not helped any!!! Ooooh, I've been soooo lazy! This semester I've turned into a procrastinator, a "B" trainee at best - and let's not talk about the dreaded math class I'm taking right now - I'll be glad to see a "C" (hey, a D is passing and that's alright with me!!!). So, why I am stating all of this? Well, I got to reasoning (because that's what this column is about right?) about how we take this same attitude with our Christian walk. When we've been saved for a while (so called seniors in Christ) we become complacent, not as ambitious, not as committed to the things of God - we get a bad case of senior-itis!

We think we've got this Christian thing down - we've learned some scriptures, we know how to rebuke the devil, we are comfortable praying in communal and we can get straight through assistance on Sunday without reasoning about what we're cooking for dinner, or what we have to do when we get home! We're senior Christians now!

But if we are honest, there are some things that we are not doing with quite as much fervor as we did when we first came to Christ. Do we look like that church in Revelation where the Lord said, "Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken your first love. (Rev.2:4)? Are you still getting up early to meet the Lord and to bask in His presence? Do you spend more time in reality tv than in the reality of God's Word? Are you just so happy and content that you are going to see Jesus that you feel that you no longer have to work out your salvation? You know your graduation day (the day you meet the Lord) is arrival so you don't need to do as much for the kingdom - let others survey and bring folk to Christ, let someone else work in that ministry (you're tired!), let someone else teach, let someone else give (you've been giving!) - let others worry about the growth of the church, the work of the church - you're a Senior Saint - its time for you to sit back and wait for graduation! If you feel like this - you've got a bad case of senior-itis and you need to get over it!

I may feel like my time in college is arrival to an end and I won't be required to do anyone else in college after May, but I can't treat my Christian walk the same way! The Lord is requiring a closer relationship with Him - we ought to want to know more, do more, be more! Not just to say we've done works - but seeking to be as effective for Christ as we can. There is no time to get complacent, there is not time to sit back while others do the work! We must continue with the same fervor and excitement with which we began our journey with Him - He said that He would continue to do that work within us that He began - so we must continue to trust Him for that promise and get over our case of senior-itis.

My answer: I have a few thoughts as I talk to this question. First, it's unusual to faultless a book after just two months of school. Are you sure your learner is in the strict grade placement? It may have been too easy in the first place which is why your learner flew straight through it, assuming he pre-tested and knew most of the words without studying. Secondly, and this information wasn't supplied in the question, I'm wondering if this book was used last year but, not completed. The mum was naturally finishing up the last few lessons in the book.

If you were asking me this query in April, I would be inclined to say sure, take a break from spelling. But at this time of year, I'd say begin the next book in the series. In other words, keep in mind that your goal is to build a strong set of memorized spelling words your son can draw from, not just faultless a textbook.

Let me change the query slightly and apply it to a different subject, asked at a different time of year. Let's say it is March and your learner has just completed his math book. In this case he accomplished pre-algebra. While there is all the time some report built into all math series (publishers assume students are coming back from a three-month summer break from school and need to review), the higher the level of math, the less of the starting of the book is dedicated to this. If your son has completed a quarter of the next book in the series, algebra 1 in this case, when you quit in May, you can be sure he'll need to back track in September, maybe even to the starting of the book to report what he "learned" but was forgotten.

So in this situation, I would say don't start the next book in the series. Instead, pick up an enrichment text (story problems, math brain teasers, etc.) at a local instructor or home school furnish store. Do math two or three times a week. Other choice would be to start the next book in the series, but plan to work straight through it most of the summer so the time spent in the spring isn't seen as a waste. Most students won't like this idea, but others will embrace it and see it as a occasion to get ahead.

But his punishments weren't what most children receive-for Anna, it meant severe beatings, sometime to the point where she lost consciousness.

And the 2 things that the man focused on the most were whether or not Anna had received Any attentiveness that day, and if she had lied. Mike felt it was his duty to keep Anna honest and make sure she remained invisible.

Although Anna feared the beatings, for her, the beatings held a deeper threat: that Mike would kill her. When Anna was still a toddler, Mike used to feed her pets to his snake, telling Anna that the same fate would happen to her if she made him angry. So Anna set out to be the perfect child so as to stay alive.

But no matter how hard she tried, she was still beaten almost every day after school. Sometimes Mike would say there was no proof she had done anyone wrong, but she probably had, so he beat her anyway.

What made matters worse, Anna's brother was in the same grade, having failed second grade-he had to repeat that year. He became Mike's informant; anyone that happened at school that complex Anna would be reported. When her brother was angry at Anna, he would tell Mike lies to get Anna beaten; Mike never believed a word Anna said.

In third grade was a girl, Caroline, who despised Anna for some reason. Three instances arose that complex both Caroline and Anna, three situations that caused the roots of disease to begin growing within Anna.

And all three were not Anna's fault, but Caroline had lied, and her lies had been believed.

The first was an honest mistake. On warmer days, children were able to convert into shorts in the afternoon. The jeans both Anna and Caroline had worn to school were similar. When the bus arrived, Anna grabbed a pair of jeans and ran to the bus; she didn't know they were Caroline's. But every person assumed Anna had stolen them on purpose because she was poor. No one would believe a word of what Anna said.

Another instance was when Caroline convinced the whole class (including Anna's brother) to say that Anna had eaten shoe polish during an art class. Again no one believed Anna. She begged and cried so hard that she couldn't breathe. She Needed man to believe her; for if no one did, her life would surely end after school because Mike would believe she had lied And had gotten attentiveness for it.

The third time was when Anna had been pushed into a coat hook and lost consciousness. The next day, she was punished at school because Caroline stated she had pushed Anna after Anna had pushed her. So Anna had to write 1,000 lines: "I will not push other people." Caroline was not reprimanded.

But writing the lines was minor. The educator notion Anna's tears and begging to be heard were just a way to get out of the punishment. The educator didn't know that Anna felt she would be killed after school.

Anna might've learned reading and math that year; but the main lessons Anna had learned was that she was alone and that no one would listen to a word she said. She had been labeled a "liar" at school and home. Because Mike felt he had failed in his efforts to keep Anna honest, his punishments became more brutal and severe. So she stopped talking and interacting with others. The only way to stay alive was to be alone, friendless and invisible.

Even so, over the next few years, Anna was beaten almost daily.

When she was in 6th grade, she had a hearing test because the teachers wondered if her lack of talking was because she couldn't hear. She hadn't understood the directions, so the school nurse sent her to a master for evaluation. It was during their appraisal that she had realized her mistake in the preliminary test. But she was afraid to tell anyone because she felt Mike would've felt she was lying to get attention.

So Anna kept silent. Soon she advanced ear infections in her left ear. Then sinus infections. As these were treated with curative drugs, she advanced hives on her legs that moved up her body over two years, then on her face, causing great swelling as if she had been beaten. By now Anna was 12.

Mike took to molesting her.

No one believed her.

She stopped crying.

And she advanced asthma.

It makes you crazy when the clueless teachers tell you to punish him by taking him out of all sports and forcing him to incorporate on school. Offense intended when I tell them you do not want that boy in your class; ice hockey and baseball were the outlets that made him manageable.

After the night of the meltdown, I had a serious talk with myself. I was over the edge and plummeting fast and if I didn't pull the rip cord now I would wallow in pain and regret. Overly dramatic? Probably. Is it what I was feeling at the time? Without a doubt.

I decided that I had to keep things in perspective. Would not finishing the math homework in 6th grade make him a terrible adult? No. Would getting a C on a paper keep him from growing up wholesome and sane? No, but my constant over reaction no ifs ands or buts would. through years of cajoling and prodding I believed that if he just tried harder and if I just pushed harder then this would all go away. I decided that the A Honor Roll was not the goal; the goal was to raise a son to become a fantastic adult.

And he is a fantastic adult. He has fantastic powers of attention when the task is something that interests him. The first day he picked up a guitar he was carefully to be the best. Today, he is a musician who spends hours playing. He loves history. He seeks knowledge on his own. He is incredibly well read on current events and world history. He understands enterprise and excels in those college courses. Most of all, he's a nice guy with a great group friends and he has his own plans for the future. Those plans may not have been the ones we had for him but they are so much sweeter because they are his own.

Just think; if you save all things your child brings home by the time they are in college you will have a two car stable full and over flowing with just their paper work and it will be spilling into your home. I believe it! I did some math figuring if you save just three (3) pieces of paper a week, times four weeks in a month times 9 months in a year (figuring school is not in session for 12 months) times 8 years in school (pre-school straight through 6th grade) that is a total of 864 pieces of paper.

·So if you think you have to save all things your child ever does on paper, you don't. A very wise preschool teacher passed on this small gem, "little kids are into process, not product. Kids live in the moment; they enjoy the moment of making the art but are quite casual about disposing of it. I have five daughters and as I have experienced this with them I know this is true.

·By sorting and going over with our children what to keep and what to let go of may help them when they are older and they have to start sorting their own mail. Now is the time for them to learn they don't have to keep all things and it is the right thing to do. As they are into process, not goods is it us parents who hold them back from letting go? It's not just about their art or schoolwork - it's about how they (and you) advent organization.

·It's about setting reasonable limits - not just for your child but also for yourself. And you are the adult so you resolve the limits. It is important for us to teach our children how to organize.

Our children will bring home art work, test papers, homework assignments and various mementos from school. Of policy we want to save their important childhood memories, but what do we keep and how do we keep it? When children bring home any of the above, look at it and discuss it with them if it something that needs attention. Not all things they bring home needs a sit down discussion with them. Start choosing right then, not later, but right then what to keep and what to toss. When cleaning out their back packs tale a look right then. If you are too busy that day; make it a priority to do it at the very least once a week. The child, if interested can be a part of this process.

As a mum and pro organizer I know the value of rescue some things and tossing other things. This is as important as home organization. Here are my suggestions of what to save and what not to save.

·Get a large envelope-10.5 X 15 is a good size. Write the child's name, name of the school, year in school, school year (2008-2009) and the teacher's name on the outside. When they have school pictures taken if you have extra's tape one with clear packing tape to the front of the envelope.

·Have one envelope for each year a child is in school. If you home school, the same principle applies. At the end of the summer of that year (assuming they do some projects you want to keep from summer programs). Place the envelope in a box with a lid on it. This can be an apple box, zerox box or a purchased plastic bin. A good place to keep this box is on the top of their closet shelf. If you use some kind of cardboard box decorate with palpate paper on the end that shows and write the child's name on it. Label the plastic box with the child's name.

·Each child has their own envelope and own box. I advise rescue a sampling of school work, not just the best, but some that are 'average'.

·If the artwork that comes into the house is bigger than your designated storage space or it begins to pile up quicker than you can process it, take a photograph of it with your children holding it. What a fun memory to look back on. Buy a photo album and originate an 'art album' for each child.

·The fridge-as a pro organizer and mum this is my least popular place for art work as it creates clutter in the kitchen, but if you like that look, then do it, but there are other marvelous ideas. ·Pin to a cork board or bulletin board.

·Create a gallery space in your home-it can be in the child's room or a more group space such as the kitchen, hallway, or family room. String a clothes line along one big wall in the children's bedroom and use clothespins to display the "collection". Rotate old and new artwork on and off the display.

·Use reasonable poster-sized box frames for pictures. One frame can hold a big piece, or several smaller works.

·Another method is to hang strips of felt from a dowel rod and allow kids to pin their art work directly to the felt.

·Laminate art work and originate placemats that you can give relatives or use during meals or messy arts and craft projects at home.

·Send pictures to relatives, when the child can write use it as stationary. (Write on the back)
·Use for wrapping paper. If you intend to use it this way, put it with the wrapping paper, not just in a pile somewhere.

For those works of art out of clay, paper-mache and science projects, let them linger for a while, until the thrill has worn off, then resolve whether something is for display or whether it was "a studying experience." If you or your child indeed want to hold on to the piece, make sure it is displayed in a way that not only honors its point but also protects it from dust and damage. If a piece is not honored and respected then it has no place in your home - whether it's a science scheme or a family heirloom.

My friend encourages her children to use their clay creations as they do tend to break or come to be less important to them and then there is no storage qoute to deal with.

Remember: You can throw many things away. I have never met an adult yet who has been handed boxes of childhood memorabilia who has not said they can't believe how much stuff their mum kept and it is just not that important to them as an adult. As the artwork is seen and enjoyed and time goes by the children and parents come to be less attached to it.

I am asked will my children's school papers last. I know the write back many citizen give is that poor capability newsprint drawing paper is probably acidic and will deteriorate over time. They go on to say you slow that process down by using acid and lignin free storage materials. My belief is since they are on acidic paper in the first place what does it matter if they are surrounded by acid free covers. I have a baby book that is almost 40 years old and all the paper has been preserved just fine. Even the photographs are clear for the most part. If you're concerned about the longevity of the pieces you've saved, you can photocopy them on acid and lignin free paper or photograph them for posterity.
